2/16/2021, 2:09:37 PM Siberian Ice Maiden. The Princess of Ukok is a mummy of a woman who died approximately 2,400 years ago. She was found in a subterranean tomb in Republic of Altai, Russia. Part of the Pazyryk culture, her discovery is possibly the most important find in Russian archaeology. As we know, the arid environment of ancient Egypt provided excellent qualities when it came to long term preservation. But just like sand, freezing temperatures and ice have been responsible for preserving bodies very well. The first thing you’ll notice about her mummy (other than her intact skin) is the tattoos on her arm. The animal is probably a heavily stylised deer. These sweeping tattoos are some of the oldest ever found on human remains and would indicate that decorating skin in a permanent way has been a part of our social make up for a very long time. Her mummification wasn’t deliberate but an accidental creation caused by seeping water and permafrost that encased her coffin, causing her body to remain hidden and secure for more than 2,400 years.
