According to a legend, the hedges are visited by a ghost called the Grey Lady, who travels the road and flits across it from tree to tree. There are several rumours about her origin. Some say she is the spirit of James Stuart's daughter, Cross Peggy. Others say she was a house maid who died under mysterious circumstances.
