The Sacra di San Michele, sometimes known as Saint Michael's Abbey, is a religious complex on Mount Pirchiriano, situated on the south side of the Val di Susa in the territory of the municipality of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino, in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. The abbey, which for much of its history was under Benedictine rule, is now entrusted to the Rosminians.

A special regional law acknowledges it as the "Symbolic monument of the Piedmont region. This monumental abbey served as one of the inspirations for the book The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.

Discovery of the Statue of Antinous at Delphi in 1894

On July 1, 1893, at the excavation of Delphi near the Temple of Apollo, archaeologists uncovered a near-perfectly preserved, still-upright statue of Antinous, the lover of the Roman Emperor Hadrian.

The statue, lovingly polished for centuries, was, in some Barbarian incursion, toppled over, loosing both arms, afterwards, however, it was gently raised and re-erected without its arms in another chapel further up the sacred way.

Sometime later, some followers of Antinous lovingly buried the statue, standing upright, to preserve it from being completely destroyed.

The impressive staircase carved out of the cliffs at Pailon del Diablo waterfall, located in Baños, central Ecuador.

This 80-meter waterfall (also called Devil's Cauldron waterfall) is located only 17 km from Baños in a small settlement called Rio Verde and is one of the most mighty waterfalls in the Baños area. An incredible set of stairs had been carved out of the cliffs adjacent to the waterfall, which can be accessed by visitors for a small fee. Otherwise, a small cave-like trail leads to the top of the cliffs through a series of narrow openings, offering a closer view of the falls. A small viewing platform at the top provides an amazingly close outlook to admire the full power of this spectacular waterfall.

Ancient Giant Trees Found Petrified in Thailand

Fossil trees that approached the heights of today’s tallest redwoods have been found in northern Thailand. The longest petrified log measures 72.2 meters (237 feet), which suggest the original tree towered to more than 100 meters (330 feet) in a wet tropical forest some 800,000 years ago.

The trees appear to have been closely related to a species alive today called Koompassia elegans, which belongs to the same family as beans, peas and black locust trees, explained lead author of the study, Marc Philippe of France’s University of Lyon. That is to say, the ancient trees are not closely related to today’s tallest trees, which are the Eucalyptus (gum trees) of Australia and Sequoia (redwoods) of California. Both of those living trees can reach about 130 meters (425 feet) in height.

Interestingly, there are no trees living today in Thailand that approach the size of the ancients.

Bannerman Castle in the Hudson Highlands State Park, NY, USA

One of the best things to do along the Hudson River is visit Pollepel Island and Bannerman Castle, a tiny jewel in the setting of the Hudson Highlands.

Pollepel Island is a 6.5 acres island in the Hudson River in New York. The principal feature on the island is Bannerman's Castle, an abandoned military surplus warehouse.

Pol Gilson embarked on the unlikely adventure in the mid 1960s and continued working on his project until his death in 2007.

Once upon a time in 1964, Pol Gilson decided to build a second home in the middle of a green area near Bigelbach in the north-east of the Grand Duchy. His first construction, made out of wood, was destroyed  in a fire in 1973. Gilson remained imperturbable even after that setback, and started with a new construction, this time using stone and concrete.

Gilson was the the son of a stonemason, who provided him with enough knowledge to start the endeavour. He further consulted professionals in the domains unknown to him, and only on one occasion loaned heavy machinery to help dig the moat around the castle walls. The rest was all completed by Gilson himself in autodidactic manner.

Gilson showed further brilliance in gathering the necessary materials. His brother used to work at a cemetery, where at one point most tomb stones were replaced with marble ones. As the stones were simply thrown away, Gilson decided to use them to built his castle walls.

The castle even made an appearance in the Luxembourgish picture "Superjhemp Retörns", where it acted as a secret bunker for the Grand Duke.
