The Vasa warship sank at the occasion of his inaugural journey in Stockholm in 1628. After 333 years at the bottom of the sea, the impressive warship was recovered and she could finally continue her journey. Today, the VASA is the best-preserved 17th century ships and can be admired within a museum structure specially built in Stockholm. The Vasa is a unique artistic treasure, consisting of 98 percent of original parts, including hundreds of wooden sculptures.

For 20 years, field scientists working with Conversation International have been exploring some of the world’s most abundant, mysterious and threatened tropical ecosystems.

To date, they have discovered more than 1,300 species new to science - although so far only 500 or so have been formally described by taxonomists, in terms of classification and naming.

In time travel, we will go back 114 years this week. In this video, you are watching the images taken in 1906 and 2020 of the famous Market Street in the US state of San Francisco. The original video on the top left is by the Miles brothers and was shot just 4 days before the big San Francisco earthquake. More than 3,000 people died in the earthquake, and more than 80 percent of the structures in San Francisco were destroyed. Archimedes (287-212 BCE) was a Greek mathematician and mechanical engineer, a pioneer in both fields, many centuries ahead of his contemporaries.

In Sicily, under the ruling of the king Hiero II of Syracuse (270 – 215 BCE), a ship with stunning dimensions was built. The material used for the construction of that giant boat equated to the material for 60 regular ships.

What was more, that vessel was meant to leave the secure coastal lanes and to cross the Mediterranean Sea. The ship was given a name – Syracusia – and represented what could be called “the first liner of antiquity.”

Known as La Doncella, the mummy sits literally frozen in sleep.

The mummy of an ancient Inca girl sits literally frozen in sleep at a museum in Argentina.

The mummy, called La Doncella or The Maiden, is that of a teenage girl who died more than 500 years ago in a ritual sacrifice in the Andes Mountains.

The girl and two other children were left on a mountaintop to succumb to the cold as offerings to the gods, according to the archaeologists who found the mummified remains in Argentina in 1999.

La Doncella was found dressed in a ceremonial tunic and adorned with a headpiece, tokens of her new status as a messenger to the heavens. The girl had also drunk corn liquor, likely to put her to sleep, scientists say, and her mouth still held fragments of coca leaves, which the Inca chewed to lessen the effects of altitude sickness.

National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Johan Reinhard, who co-led the expedition, described the discovery at the time as "the best preserved of any mummy I've seen." (National Geographic News is a division of the National Geographic Society.)

Pol Gilson embarked on the unlikely adventure in the mid 1960s and continued working on his project until his death in 2007.

Once upon a time in 1964, Pol Gilson decided to build a second home in the middle of a green area near Bigelbach in the north-east of the Grand Duchy. His first construction, made out of wood, was destroyed  in a fire in 1973. Gilson remained imperturbable even after that setback, and started with a new construction, this time using stone and concrete.

Gilson was the the son of a stonemason, who provided him with enough knowledge to start the endeavour. He further consulted professionals in the domains unknown to him, and only on one occasion loaned heavy machinery to help dig the moat around the castle walls. The rest was all completed by Gilson himself in autodidactic manner.

Gilson showed further brilliance in gathering the necessary materials. His brother used to work at a cemetery, where at one point most tomb stones were replaced with marble ones. As the stones were simply thrown away, Gilson decided to use them to built his castle walls.

The castle even made an appearance in the Luxembourgish picture "Superjhemp Retörns", where it acted as a secret bunker for the Grand Duke.

The Acropolis of Athens and its monuments are universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity to the world. In the second half of the fifth century bc, Athens, following the victory against the Persians and the establishment of democracy, took a leading position amongst the other city-states of the ancient world. In the age that followed, as thought and art flourished, an exceptional group of artists put into effect the ambitious plans of Athenian statesman Pericles and, under the inspired guidance of the sculptor Pheidias, transformed the rocky hill into a unique monument of thought and the arts. If you are visiting Bangkok and looking for a family attraction away from the tourist crowds, pay a visit to the highly recommended Ancient Siam park. Located just outside of Bangkok, this attraction may still be referred to by its original name of the Ancient City (Muang Boran), but as it has grown in size it is probably more accurate to call it by its new name of Ancient Siam. The park has been described as one of the world’s largest outdoor museums. Located to the south-east of Bangkok in the Samut Prakan district, the landscaped park is shaped like a map of Thailand with replicas of important buildings and sites located within the park according to their correct geographical location. For instance, the north-eastern part of the park is home to Preah Vihear whilst a replica of the Grand Palace can be found in the central region. Some of the buildings are full-scale replicas whilst others have been scaled down, but experts from the National Museum ensure that the replicas are historically accurate. As well as the ancient historical replicas there are restaurants, food and drink outlets and even a Floating Market so there is plenty to keep you occupied.

The park was the brainchild of Lek Viriyaphant who, in the early 1960s, had originally planned to construct a golf course featuring miniature replicas of ancient Thai buildings. The scheme changed the more Lek researched and saw the way that some of Thailand’s ancient historical buildings had been neglected. Instead of a golf course he decided the park would be an educational area preserving Thai culture and historic building techniques. Today, Ancient Siam is home to a dedicated team of local artisans who work alongside experts from the National Museum of Thailand to help preserve Thailand’s cultural heritage.

The 'Pink Palace' of Drumlanrig, constructed between 1679 and 1689 from distinctive pink sandstone, is an example of late 17th-century Renaissance architecture.
