Meteora is an exquisite complex that consists of huge dark stone pillars rising outside Trikala, near the mountains of Pindos. The monasteries that sit on top of these rocks make up the second most important monastic community in Greece, after Mount Athos in Halkidiki. Out of the thirty monasteries that were founded throughout the centuries, only six of them are active today.

The history of Meteora goes many millenniums back. Theories upon the creation of this natural phenomenon are associated with the geological movements that have occurred several geological periods ago. Scientists believe that these pillars were formatted about 60 million years ago, during the Tertiary Period. That time, the area was covered by sea but a series of earth movements caused the seabed to withdraw. The mountains left were continuously hit by strong winds and waves, which, in combination with extreme weather conditions, affected their shape. This is why the pillars are composed of sandstone and conglomerate.

In the Byzantine times, monks had the inspiration to construct monasteries on top of these rocks so that they would be closer to god. The foundation of Meteora monasteries began around the 11th century. In the 12th century, the first ascetic state was officially formed and established a church to the Mother of God as their worshiping center. Activities on this church were not only related to worshiping God, but hermits used these occasions to discuss their problems and exchange ideas relating to their ascetic life there.

This gate in Jerusalem, which was under the auspices of the Ottoman Empire at that time, was built by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1538 as part of the reconstruction of the old city walls. In the photo above, we see a shot of the same place taken today.

The Memorial in Thermopylae, which was erected in 1955, by the sculptor named Vasos Falireas, is a sculptural synthesis that consists of the brass statue of Leonides with his spear and shield in the centre, while on the right and left and in a lower height we have the marble figures of the personified Taigetos, which is the highest mountain in the Peloponese and the personified Evrotas which is a river flowing through the whole district of Laconia. The figure of King Leonides was based on an ancient warrior that was found in the excavation conducted by the British Archaeological School in 1920 and was identified as King Leonides. It should be noted that the Heroon in Thermopylae was constructed and erected by funds from Greeks living in America.

Leonides' sacrifice along with his 300 comrades has become a timeless symbol and in the location where Lionides and his comrades died, ancient Greeks erected a momument bearing the well-known Simonides' epigram : Ὦ ξεῖν’, ἀγγέλλειν Λακεδαιμονίοις ὅτι τῇδε κείμεθα, τοῖς κείνων ῥήμασι πειθόμενοι. Which can be translated to : 'O Stranger, send the news home to the people of Sparta that here we Are laid to rest: the commands they gave us have been obeyed. Which means : 'We died here following the traditions of the Spartans'. After the battle in Thermopylae a stone lion was built for everyone to remember the name of the king that died in this location. His body was sent to be buried in Sparta in 440BC.

Glenfinnan is a hamlet in Lochaber area of the Highlands of Scotland. In 1745 the Jacobite rising began here when Prince Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard on the shores of Loch Shiel. Seventy years later, the 18 m Glenfinnan Monument, at the head of the loch, was erected to commemorate the historic event.

It is said that the patron saint of the Gulf of La Spezia, Saint Venerius (in Italian San Venerio) lived in on the island as a hermit, and later as abbot, until his death in 630. It is believed that a local sanctuary was constructed at the place of Venerio’s death to contain his remains and that this was extended to form a monastery in the eleventh century. The remains of the monastery can be seen on the northern coast of the island. The monastery functioned till 1446. In the XIX century, a lighthouse was constructed here. Today the island, which is part of a military zone, is surmounted by the San Venerio Lighthouse.

Khafre, also spelled Khafra, Greek Chephren, (flourished 26th century BCE), fourth king of the 4th dynasty (c. 2575–c. 2465 BCE) of ancient Egypt and builder of the second of the three Pyramids of Giza.

Khafre was the son of King Khufu and succeeded the short-lived Redjedef, probably his elder brother. He married his sister Khamerernebti, Meresankh III, and perhaps two other queens. Although many of his relatives were hastily buried in cheap tombs, his own pyramid was almost as vast as the Great Pyramid of his father. Khafre’s valley temple, linked to the pyramid by a causeway, was constructed of great monolithic blocks of granite and contained remarkable statues of the king carved from diorite taken from a remote quarry in the Nubian Desert. Near the causeway is located the Great Sphinx (see sphinx), which many consider to bear Khafre’s features.
